Streptomycin is one of the oldest and safest antibiotics for use in cell culture to control many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, and is commonly used in combination with penicillin G for a broader spectrum of activity. It has no effect on fungi.
